ZUCO 103 & PIPS:lab vs ORPHEU NEGRO (Marcel Camus, Fr./Br. 1959)
Paradiso

JANSEN MET FORTUIN vs YELLOW SUBMARINE (George Dunning, GB 1968)
Paradiso (kelder)

Yellow Submarine is a lovely animation film, typical of its time. Whilst you watch it, you have to ask yourself whether the crew were on a serious LSD trip or had smoked a few joints too many in the animation room! Yet in 1968, however hallucinatory and surreal it was, it was never regarded as especially revolutionary or experimental. It was seen more of a vehicule for the songs of the Beatles from the Lonely Hearts Club album.

George Dunning’s film features the bizarre adventures of 4 Liverpudlian lads who are on a quest to free Pepperland from the Blue Meanies. They encount all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures and characters along the way, in an underwaterworld decorated by ever-mutating flowerpower colours and pop-art shapes. Yellow Submarine is a sort of Betty Boop on acid.

The original versie of the film, with Beatles songs like ‘All You Need is Love’, ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ has been updated by Helpende Henk, who with the help of the DJ-duo Jansen Met Fortuin, an array of household gadgets for soundeffects and a smattering of new poppy music has given a new crunchy and eclectic impulse to this great sixties classic.

ROCKET CLASH – VREEMDE FILMS
Sugar Factory

JEFF MILLS DOUBLE BILL – THREE AGES (Buster Keaton, VS 1923) & METROPOLIS (Fritz Lang, Duitsland 1926)
Rialto

Jeff Mills is a one of the worlds best-known DJs, a pioneer and ambassador for techno, a creative producer and prolific musician. Unfortunately he can’t be with us for the Rocket Cinema Festival, but has kindly consented to the screening of two classic silent movies with his own new soundtracks.

Metropolis is probably the most famous film in the history of the cinema and has been saddled with ‘contemporary’ soundtracks in every era of it’s long existence. Unfortunately most of the soundtracks are hopelessly dated (eg Giorgio Morroder & Genesis), whilst Fritz Lang’s masterpiece remains stunning in it’s use of visual and spatial effects. Fortunately Jeff Mills, himself an inhabitant of the great metropolis Detroit, has chosen to make the latest version, a perfect interpretation and reflection of modern industrialism.
In Metropolis, the first ‘blockbuster’ ever, the city itself is the star, set in the 21st Century (then far away in the future), with its towering skyscrapers, an immense network of elevated roads and railways and it’s fully mechanised society. The inhabitants of the future are reduced to slavery onder the rule of a power-mad dictator. Never before had a director used camerawork and set design to such a level as that which breathed life into Metropolis.

The French label MK2 commissioned Jeff Mills to composed a new soundtrack for a re-release DVD of Buster Keaton’s ‘The Three Ages’. An unusual choice; Mill’s electronic techno would appear not to have much in common with Keaton’s humoristic film about love and relationships in three different ages – the prehistory, Roman Empire and modern (early 20th Century) life. But Mills has produced a series of classic techno compositions – to call them ‘tracks’ would be an understatement – that have a certain timelessness. Lots of ambient passages where strings and electronic melodies predominate. He has managed to produce a soundtrack that is at once intimate and alienating alike.

BOMBAY CONNECTION
Paradiso (kleine zaal)

GERRY ARLING’s Bombay Connection Sitar Band
– 70s Bollywood cult film GUN MASTER G-9
– SUJATA GOEL “disco dancer” choreography
– DJ EDO en DJ JOHANZ with original 60s, 70s, 80s Jazz, Funk, R&R en Disco from Bollywood films
– Crazy, colourful dance & action clips from 60s, 70s and 80s films

Very few people realize how funky, danceable and especially how limitless original Bollywood actually is. With the release of the first two volumes of the compilation series THE BOMBAY CONNECTION the doors of Bollywood’s treasure chambers are opened widely for the first time. And what first emerges is the spectacular Bollywood funk of the 1970s and the infectious, bouncing Night club music of the 1960s. Sounds so exciting that we at BOMBAY CONNECTION believe that everybody should hear them, and a good reason to organize a tour visiting several Dutch stages to present Bollywood’s most exciting sounds and visuals, kicking off the 20th of October in Paradiso, Amsterdam. This live music performance will create a new soundtrack to the 1979 cult film GUNMASTER G-9, a funky Indian film soaked with karate fights, motorbike chases and undersea headquarters. Hilarious are the ultra cheap special effects like card buildings, toy cars on toy parachutes, a label machine a laser gun. Altogether a genuine Indian ED WOOD, but then with bell-bottom trousers, sideburns, Desi Bond girls and an insanely funky soundtrack.

Bollywood’s boundless originality inspired the composer/arranger GERRY ARLING (of the duo ARLING & CAMERON) to stage a live performance of these sounds. The band will consist of the turntablist KYPSKI, Sandip Battacharya – tabla, Jan Klug – fluit, sax & weird noises, Hans Kaldeway – keyboards & loops, Harry Arling – drums, Gerry Arling – bass. They will be re-creating the music of Bollywood composer R.D. Burman and the legendary sounds of the sitar psych music of ANANDA SHANKAR.

The modern dancer and choreographer SUJATA GOEL will perform her piece DISCO DANCER, a choreography made after a dance in the similar titled Bollywood movie from 1982. Sujata Goel (India/USA) was educated in South India in the Carnatic dance tradition, and danced in the modern dance troupe of PADMINI CHETTUR. Recently she received additional dance training at the contemporary dance school of de KEERSMAEKER’s P.A.R.T.S. She will perform her choreography with the dancer TAREK HALABY (Palestine/USA).

The same evening a 12” with Bollywood tracks will also be presented, remixed by the best Dutch acts like C-Mon & Kyspki, Kraak & Smaak, Git Hyper and Gerry Arling.

The evening closes with a DJ set: the compiler of the CD series and fervent Bollywood music collector EDO BOUMAN and fellow collector DJ JOHANZ will DJ the best, funkiest and craziest tunes from their collections, accompanied by the most colorful and outrageous Bollywood film clips.

THE TRIP

BENNY SINGS – SCHATJES  (Ruud van Hemert, NL 1984)

Rialto

Schatjes (Little Darlings) is one of the few Dutch teen-movies of the 80’s, and for many 30+ers today a real blast from the past. The film follows a rebellious family of teenagers who rebel against their parents and eventually barricade themselves in the family home, wrecking the place and attacking anyone and everyone who tries to get in.

Benny Sings recognised himself in the anarchistic, socially critical side of the film and set to work, with full permission from the director, to bring the slightly dated film and music soundtrack up to date.
The result is a fully enjoyable hour and a half of toe-curling 80’s fashion, hilarious seige-situations and of course Benny’s music.

For the non-Dutch speaking audience, forget the dialogue, there’s very little deep-thinking behind it. The plot’s pretty simple to follow in any language!

ALEC SMART – JAWS  (Steven Spielber, VS 1975)
Zuiderbad

A very special edition of Rocket Cinema where Steven Spielberg’s shark-thriller JAWS (VS, 1975), with a new soundtrack by DJ Alec Smart will be shown in a very special indoor swimming pool location.

We find ourselves in the Zuiderbad, a popular indoor pool in the centre of Amsterdam, twin-town to Amity Island on the east coast of America. The eveniong swimming sessions in the Zuiderbad have been plagued for some time by a great white shark that enjoys a human limb or two now and again for supper. The town council, in an attempt to avoid panic and damage the reputation of its local sports facilities has tried to cover up the first attacks but eventually have to call in the help of local sherriff Martin Brody (Roy Scheider). Together with biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), shark expert Quin (Robert Shaw), DJ Alec Smart and the English deep sea diver & choirmaster Michael Blass, Brody sets sail to destroy the shark. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…

Steven Spielberg’s shark horror was an immense succes in the 70’s and continues to scare the life out of audiences today. Alec Smart will be using the infamous underwater soundtrack to full effect, adding musical interludes and soundeffects in his own inimitable style. Things could get slippery, so a towel and flip-flops are recommended!

Bring your own swimring or anti-shark missile!
Swimming, snorkling and floating around on the water is permitted – IF YOU DARE!!!

EASY ALOHA’S – PLAYTIME (Jacques Tati, Fr 1967)
Cinerama

For many film lovers is ‘Playtime’ Jacques Tati’s absolute masterpiece. The film cost a fortune in 1967 and almost caused the bankruptcy of Tati. With the exception of some scenes filmed on location in and around the newly-built Orly airport, the rest of the filming took place in a futuristic model town, a breathtakingly beautiful and realistic full size set built completely from scratch. Name of the town: Tativille.

Playtime is for Tati a statement against the unimaginative anonymity of the modern world, a recurring theme in all of his films. He believed that mechanisation and greed were a growing threat to civilisation. The real human values of individuality, warmth and care would be lost.
‘Playtime’ has more in common with the films of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton than other contemporary films of the sixties. But in comparison to the silent classics it is stunningly modern in its look and design. It remains a funny story with no dialogue, but has a definite message. Tati’s vision of modern society is clear and direct.

The Easy Aloha’s, DJ/producer duo from Utrecht became well known in the mid-90’s with the Easy Tune revival. For Playtime , they will dust off their fantastic vinyl collection to provide a soundtrack to bring the city back to life again.

SCREEN CUISINE – TAMPOPO
Paradiso
